Drug dependence is an addiction to a street drug or a prescribed medication. When you are addicted, you may not be able to control your drug use and you may continue using the drug despite the harm it causes.
Dependence occurs over time, usually without the realization it is happening. When we become dependent on a substance we might notice that our lives and our decisions are based upon our need to acquire and use substances, regardless of the consequences we may begin to take risks we would not have otherwise have considered.
